Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
