Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study indicates that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such treatments must be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
